Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel appoints new DGP, advisers

THE CHANGE in government has brought about a spate of bureaucratic changes in the Chhattisgarh government. On Thursday, the Bhupesh Baghel government appointed 1986 batch officer D M Awasthi as Director General of Police replacing A N Upadhyaya who has been transferred to the Police Housing Board. Awasthi also holds charge of Anti Naxal Operations, Economic Offences Wing and Anti-Corruption Bureau. In changes to the CM’s secretariat, former BBC journalist Vinod Verma has been appointed as Baghel’s political adviser, Ruchir Garg, former Navbharat Editor has been appointed his media adviser, and Rajesh Tiwari, who many credits for the Congress organization in Chhattisgarh, has been appointed Vidhan Sabha adviser.

Farm loan waiver figure can go up after study, says Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel

Keeping the promise made by the Congress in the run-up to the assembly elections, newly appointed Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel waived off farm loans taken from cooperative and rural banks worth Rs 6,100 crore on his first day in office. That figure, however, might as well go up. As of now, loans taken from commercial banks have not been taken into account and it is the short-term agricultural loans have largely been taken care of, the CM told The Indian Express. In case of the other loans – be it crop loans or other agriculture-related loans, the government needs to study them, said the CM.

Chhattisgarh plans law to protect scribes

Acting on the demand of the journalist fraternity, the Chhattisgarh government is mulling a law for the protection of journalists. If sources are to be believed, orders vis-a-vis have been issued and a draft of the journalist protection act will be prepared in the next few days. “We have promised in our manifesto that a law will be made for the protection of journalists if we come in power hence it is our priority. We are very sensitive about the protection of journalists across the state,” said chief minister Bhupesh Baghel told Hindustan Times. Sources close to the chief minister said that a draft of the law will be made after consulting senior journalists, activists, and human rights defenders. “We will discuss the law with the editors across the country and also with organizations of journalists,” said an official working on the draft of the law.

The win for Congress on December 11 meant that party chief Rahul Gandhi had to pick three chief ministers. With two states – Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan done earlier this week, the decision to name the top pick of Chhattisgarh was made today after a legislative party meets in Raipur. Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi tweeted an image of him posing with all the four contenders — Bhupesh Baghel, TS Singh Deo, Tamradhwaj Sahu, and Charan Das Mahant. Congress put an end to a 15-year BJP rule in Chhattisgarh by winning 68 of the 90 seats in the assembly elections.

Colourful rangolis adorn Raipur’s Marine Drive

As part of the ongoing Matdaan Deepotsav, students and citizens took part at a rangoli making competition organised recently at Marine Drive, Raipur. As many as 100 people took part in the competition. Through their colourful art, people spread awareness on the importance of voting. According to social media account of Raipur Smart City Limited, Matdaan Deepotsav has also given people a chance to show their creative side. Several colleges are also organising skits on campus.

C’garh 19th in Sustainable Development Goals Index: Centre

Chhattisgarh has stood 19th among states in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index of NITI Aayog with a score of 53, the Central Government informed on Friday. The states in the performer category were– Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Tripura, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Delhi and Lakshadweep. The NITI Aayog on Friday had released the Baseline Report of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) India Index, which comprehensively documents the progress made by India’s States and Union Territories towards implementing the 2030 SDG targets.

DLSA Raipur gets the national award as ‘Best DLSA’

Raipur District Legal Service Authority (DLSA) has received the national award as ‘Best DLSA’ for the year 2017-18. The award was handed over by National Legal Service Authority, New Delhi at a function held at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital. Chhattisgarh State Legal Service Authority Executive Chairman and Chhattisgarh High Court Judge, Justice Prashank Kumar Mishra, DLSA Raipur Chairman and District and Sessions Judge Ramkumar Tiwari and CGLSA Bilaspur member Vivek Kumar Tiwari received the trophy and citation from Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravishankar Prasad. Raipur DLSA secretary Umesh Kumar Upadhyay said that for it is for the first time Raipur DLSA reached out to the people on roads, streets, and schools. For creating legal awareness, the judges took out cycle rally and did foot march. At Marine Drive, Raipur legal awareness camp and film-shows on legal issues were conducted. Camps were held in more than 200 schools while in 22 schools ‘Legal Awareness Club’ were also opened.

‘Official documents can only be destroyed as per Govt guidelines’

After the case of alleged destroying of some documents at the official residence of former Home Minister on Tuesday, some documents were allegedly found burnt at the official residence of a former legislator, Santosh Bafna. Chief Secretary, Ajay Singh while taking cognizance over the matter have directed officials concerned that the destroyer of Government documents should be done only by abiding rules and regulations mentioned in guidelines issued by the Government.
