8 Mistakes To Avoid While Brushing

A healthy set of teeth add beauty to your smile and unless you’re a dentist, you probably don’t realize that you are committing a sin as far as your teeth are concerned. Being aware of those sins is the first step to protect your teeth.

Here are 10 common mistakes every individual does knowingly or unknowingly which makes bacteria dwell in your mouth.

 

  1. Brushing For Less Than 2 Minutes

The average person’s brushing time is two minutes. If you brush your teeth for shorter than 2 minutes, you’re not giving the fluoride in your toothpaste enough time to work on the enamel in your tooth. Patience for maintaining a good oral hygiene is highly required. If you’re not giving the time it demands, what’s the point of doing it at all ?

 

2) Rinsing your Mouth with Water after Brushing

It must be sounding odd to many but yes – you should never rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth as it washes away the Fluoride present in the toothpaste which is necessary. You can spit the toothpaste and gargle using any mouthwash containing fluoride and that should be enough.

 

3) Storing Your Toothbrush In The Bathroom

I know a lot of people are probably guilty of making this mistake. Always consider storing your toothbrush someplace other than your bathroom – like on your nightstand or inside your medicine cabinet. Keeping it open inside the bathroom makes it prone to germs and deteriorates the hygiene standards.

 

4) Using Your Toothbrush For Way Too Long

A toothbrush is not meant to be used forever. With consistent use (twice a day for seven days a week) – the average life of a toothbrush is about three months. Hence, it needs to be replaced at least after every three to four months. You need to change your toothbrush once the bristles lose their flexibility. You also need to replace your brush after you have had the flu or cold.

 

5)Using Incorrect Brushing Technique And Motion

     You must always brush your teeth in circular motions and not back and forth. Brushing in circular motions is recommended as it is very gentle and effective when it comes to cleaning gaps that are in between the teeth. Avoid brushing so hard that the bristles bend on your teeth.

6) Brushing Straight After A Meal

     Immediately after eating your meal – the pH levels in the mouth drop and your saliva has a higher acid content. Brushing your teeth can rub these acids deeper into enamel of your teeth. You need to wait at least 30 minutes after a meal to brush your teeth.

7)  Not Cleaning Your Tongue


    Clean your tongue after brushing your teeth is of utmost importance and it prevents bad breath and remove bacteria. A tongue cleaner scrapes the residual bacteria off your tongue. Hence, it is crucial to clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth.

8) Brushing Teeth More Than Twice A Day


    Some people think it’s okay to brush three or four times a day – usually after every             meal. But there is no need to brush your teeth more than two times a day as it can actually damage your gums and erodes the enamel on your teeth. Too much anything is not good!

 

Apart from these basic tips to maintain a healthy oral hygiene, regular visit to the dental expert will ensure a long-term health of your teeth. It is important and highly recommended to get a profession dental cleaning at least twice a year.
