  • NSE partners with IIT Kanpur

The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE), India’s leading Stock exchange, on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Kanpur, one of the premier technology institutes in the country, to work together on industry-leading Cyber Security solutions and practices. The NSE-IIT Kanpur partnership aims to develop and create an environment to not only negotiate and deal with the current and future cybersecurity challenges in the Indian financial and capital markets eco-system, but also to develop tools to further strengthen the cybersecurity framework. Through this engagement, IIT Kanpur faculty would help NSE in the areas of Cyber Security.

  • SC directs Centre to file an affidavit on steps taken for the appointment of Lokpal

The Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre to place on affidavit steps taken till date for Lokpal’s appointment and expressed its displeasure over the tardy progress made in this regard. The apex court asked Attorney General KK Venugopal to file an affidavit by January 17, when the matter will be taken up again for hearing, explaining in detail the various steps, including the setting up of a search committee by the competent authority for recommending names for the appointment. The search committee will forward the names to the selection committee members comprising the Prime Minister, the leader of the single largest Opposition party, the Lok Sabha speaker and an eminent jurist. A Bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice SK Kaul said everything on the issue has to come on record through an affidavit. The attorney general had submitted that progress has been made since September last year over the appointment of Lokpal and wanted to place before the Bench a prepared note. However, the Bench declined to accept the note and said, “Bring everything on record what you have done since September 2018”.

  • Lok Sabha okays bill to make Aadhaar linkage voluntary

The Lok Sabha on Friday passed a bill to amend three laws to provide legal backing to the government’s decision to allow voluntary linkage of Aadhaar with mobile phone numbers and bank accounts. The bill seeking to amend the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Prevention of Money-laundering Act, 2002, was introduced in Parliament on Wednesday. The government wants to lay the ground for allowing Aadhaar to be used by private entities for identity checks despite a Supreme Court ruling in September that Aadhaar can only be used for welfare schemes and for delivering state subsidies. It had barred private companies from using Aadhaar data for authenticating customers. The court, seeking to address privacy concerns, said it was not mandatory to link Aadhaar with bank accounts or mobile phone numbers.

  • Ahead of Kumbh Mela 2019, Air India announces special flights to Prayagraj

To aid passenger travel during Kumbh Mela 2019, national carrier Air India on Friday announced new flights between Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata. The flights will be operational from January 13 to March 30, 2019. Earlier, low-cost carrier SpiceJet also announced daily flights between Prayagraj and Delhi from January 6 to March 30. The Uttar Pradesh government also asked the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to run 500 special buses from various parts of the state to Pragraj during the Kumbh Mela, a UP minister said Friday. Upendra Tiwari called upon Himachal Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur to formally invite them to participate in the fair. Nearly 12 crore devotees are expected to visit the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj which will begin January 15. Touted as the biggest cultural and religious event in the world, the Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj has been accorded the status of world heritage by the UNESCO. The event, which will conclude on March 4, has been included in the list of ‘intangible cultural heritage of humanity.’

Kauravas were born due to stem cell and test tube technologies and India also possessed knowledge about guided missiles thousands of years ago, claimed Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G. Nageshwar Rao at the Indian Science Congress on Friday. He claimed the ‘Dashavtar’, ten avatars of Lord Vishnu, predate the Theory of Evolution given by English naturalist Charles Darwin. At a presentation, Mr. Rao said Lord Rama used ‘astras’ and ‘shastras’ (weapons), while Lord Vishnu sent a Sudarshan Chakra to chase targets. After hitting them they would come back. This shows that the science of guided missiles is not new to India and it was present thousands of years ago, the vice chancellor said.

  • India wants a simpler, easier GST complaint form for consumers

India wants to make it easier for consumers to complain against companies that may not be passing on the benefits of lower goods and services tax (GST) after having slashed rates on a number of items of daily use and Union finance minister Arun Jaitley pledging a single standard slab. The anti-profiteering format will be simplified so that complaints can be made on a single page, said officials with knowledge of the matter. The current format requires consumers to fill in details such as the Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) code of an item, maximum retail price, tax rate, pre and post-reduction price, all of which require the guidance of an expert. “You need a professional to fill the form,” said Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi and a member of the GST Council.”A lot of unwanted information is sought from the consumer, making it difficult for him to fill it.”

  • JAM 2019 Admit Card not releasing today, expected by January 8

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur has postponed the release date of the Joint Admission Test (JAM) 2019 admit card to January 8, 2019. Students can download the admit card for JAM 2019 from the JAM official website – jam.iitkgp.ac.in. The admit card was supposed to be out today. The JAM 2019 exam is scheduled to be held on February 10, 2019. The test will be conducted in two sessions. Session I will be held in morning i.e, from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM and the session II will be from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM. The JAM entrance exam is being conducted for admission in MSc, Joint MSc-PhD, MSc-PhD dual degree at IITs and Integrated Ph.D. at IISC. NITs and other government colleges also consider JAM 2019 entrance exam scores for M.Sc admission. Applicant must carry the print out of the admit card and valid ID proof on the day of the test. Aadhaar ID, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport, and Voter ID are acceptable ID proofs. The results of the JAM 2019 will be announced on March 20, 2019.

  • HPL to set up Rs 60k cr refinery, petrochem projects at Kakinada SEZ

In a major boost for the petroleum and petrochemical sector in Andhra Pradesh, Kakinada SEZ Ltd (KSEZ), a subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure Limited, on Friday said that TCG Group’s (The Chatterjee Group) flagship Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) will be setting up refinery and petrochemical project at the Kakinada SEZ at an investment of Rs 60,000 crore.A memorandum of understanding to this effect was inked between the AP government and HPL in Kakinada on Friday and the project is expected to be completed within five years in a phased manner. “The proposed refinery and petrochemical project in Kakinada SEZ over the years is expected to generate around 5 lakh direct and indirect jobs. It will also provide a fillip to the port, with significant liquid cargo traffic,” KSEZ said in a release.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has found a unique way to appease voters before the Lok Sabha elections. The AP CM and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief distributed 30 Maruti Swift Dzire cars to the poor youths from the Brahmin community at his rally in Amravati. Naidu said this move will ensure that families of marginalized and economically backward Brahmins also get support like other communities from the state government. Apart from this, the state government has established Andhra Pradesh Brahmin Welfare Corporation for the upliftment of poor Brahmins. The scheme was introduced in December 2014 and under this scheme, the government has started almost half-a-dozen schemes for the Brahmins. According to media reports, about 10,000 poor Brahmins received loans and subsidies.

  • CAT 2018 result released, 11 candidates, score overall 100 percentile

Results for Common Admission Test 2018 were declared by Indian Institute of Management – Calcutta (IIMC) on Saturday. This year, 11 candidates have scored an overall 100 percentiles in CAT 2018. All 11 candidates are male and from engineering and technology background. From the graduation records, 7 candidates are from different IITs followed by 2 candidates from Jadavpur University. From the permanent address provided during application, 7 candidates are from West Bengal and one each from Karnataka and Bihar. 21 candidates have scored an overall 99.99 percentiles in CAT 2018. Out of the 21 candidates, 19 candidates are from engineering and technology backgrounds. “This clearly indicates that the attempt which was consciously started by the IIMs to break the monopoly of engineering students bagging seats in the premier B-schools of the country to diversify the classroom composition could not yet be achieved,” said a senior IIMC professor.

  • Govt procured rice reaches 238.8L tonnes

The Government has procured 238.8 lakh tonnes of rice in the current 2018-19 marketing season so far, with the buying in Punjab and Haryana almost over. According to Government data, rice procurement target for the current season (October-September) has been fixed at 375 lakh tonnes. In the previous year, total rice procurement stood at 381.8 lakh tonnes. Procurement is undertaken by State-run Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state agencies for the central pool to meet the requirement of food security law. Rice is purchased at the minimum support price (MSP). According to FCI data, rice procurement has reached 113.3 lakh tonnes in Punjab, 39.09 lakh tonnes in Haryana and 22.42 lakh tonnes in Chhattisgarh so far. Rice procurement has touched 22.46 lakh tonnes in Telangana, 13.28 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh and 10.7 lakh tonnes in Andhra Pradesh so far, the data showed. The Ministry of Food and Consumer Affairs said the procurement operation in Punjab and Haryana is almost complete. The buying in Chhattisgarh, where farmers had stopped selling their produce in anticipation of a hike in MSP, has resumed after the new Government in the State implemented its poll promise. The rice purchase in eastern states such as Bihar and West Bengal normally starts from January.
