Vrindavan’s Largest City Forest: Development

The Uttar Pradesh temple city of Vrindavan is in the process of creating the
country’s most expansive urban forest. The project, known as Saubhari
Nagar Van, is a collaborative effort involving various entities, including the
state forest department, Mathura District Administration, Brij Teerth Vikas
Parishad, Mathura-Vrindavan Development Authority, and the Forest Department.

This ambitious

initiative aims to transform approximately 130
hectares of land near Sunrakh village in Vrindavan into a thriving city forest.
The development of Saubhari Nagar Van is unfolding in two distinct
phases, overseen by the Forest Department. A total of around 76,000 trees
are being planted to revitalize the city forest. The initial phase saw the
planting of 76,875 trees across 123 hectares of land. Notably, this forest
encompasses over 25 different species of Braj mythical trees, adding to its
ecological and cultural significance.

Regional Forest Officer Brijesh Singh Parmar

Revealed that the city forest is
set to evolve into an attraction for both pilgrims and tourists. Plans are
underway to establish a park within the forest premises, complete with
amenities such as a jogging track, swings, and children’s play areas.
Beyond its recreational value, this endeavor serves the dual purpose of
advancing eco-restoration efforts while addressing the persistent issue of
monkey populations. Officials are also considering strategies to manage
monkey populations within the forest in the future.

The chosen site for the Saubhari City Forest holds historical and religious
importance, situated between the Kosi drain and the Yamuna River. This
area holds significance as the location of Lord Krishna’s Kaliyadah Daman
Leela and the Taposthali of Saubhari Rishi. Presently, Sunrakh is home to
an ashram dedicated to Saubhari Rishi, further enriching the region’s
cultural tapestry.

Saubhari Rishi finds mention in various ancient texts, including the sixth
chapter of the ninth canto of Vishnu Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana, and
Shrimad Bhagavata Purana. The Saubhari City Forest project is poised to
contribute to the development of eco-restoration within the local
environment while providing a solution to the challenge posed by monkey
populations. As it takes shape in Mathura-Vrindavan, this city forest is
positioned to become the largest of its kind in the nation.
