In the dynamic world of fashion, creative minds illuminate the runway with their unique visions. One such visionary is Mansi Jaggi Sehggal, a rising star in the industry who has been captivating hearts with her distinctive designs. In an interview with ‘Reincarnating Raipur’, she discusses her journey, inspirations, and the artistry behind her creations.
Mansi Jaggi Sehggal, founder of MJS designer studio based in Raipur & Nightwear brand SLEEPTIGHT. She studied fashion & graduated from Pune’s SCHOOL OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY’, which has been RANKED 7th in India’s best college in 2023. Later, she worked in Mumbai with various designers and international brands like FUTURE GROUP, United Colors of Benetton, Calvin Klein, French Connection, Vero Moda, Only, Jack, and Jones, etc to gain knowledge and expertise. She got married in 2013 and since then settled in Raipur. She has a cute little 5yr old son.
Being asked about her life-changing moments, she recalls, “After marriage, I was keen on building my brand MANSI JAGGI SEHGGAL, with which I am now completing a successful and joyful 10 years and succeeded in making a mark by launching collections on various platforms like DUBAI FASHION WEEK, DELHI FASHION WEEK, etc over the years and participated in a lot of exhibitions across INDIA. I am quite an independent woman with a lot of passion for my work. Work is Worship, I believe consistency is the key”.
She has a huge experience in the world of fashion wherein she’s been in the field of design & obtained a lot of exposure in terms of training as she earned the opportunity to participate in the visual merchandising training session with the FRENCH CONNECTION TEAM IN LONDON.
When asked about her experience achieving all that, she replies, “It was a great experience for me and has been helping me till now basically for my work yeah so that and then after that experience I got married in 2013 and I shifted to Raipur and on the same year, three months after my marriage I started my label by the name of MANSI JAGGI SEHGGAL, so now I’ll be completing around 10 years”.
Talking about the difficulties during her business setup, she said, “When I started my brand I would say yes it was difficult because in that time 10 years back, Raipur had very little exposure to fashion during those days. Thus, people used to confuse me from being a designer to being a boutique. Gradually it took me a little while for people to understand that I am a fashion designer and I’m not a boutique person. It took me around two years to make a mark I would say and people started understanding it. But now, the whole scenario has changed, Raipur has grown a lot in terms of fashion and also people in this city are very fashionable”.
While chatting with MANSI JAGGI SEHGGAL, she shared with us, “I was one of the few designers in town who used to source all raw materials and fabrics from various cities in India and was keen on bringing the best of fashion and best of trends to my town & I still do the same; the more you travel, the more you experience what’s trending in other cities. So that your collection is always at par! And you also tend to learn a lot about new fabrics, new embroideries, new prints, and so on. We always make sure to go with the trend and thus we offer always something new. I don’t believe in repeating style. As I don’t only cater to Raipur, I cater to the entire Chhattisgarh and Orissa, I have a lot of clients from both of these states. They travel and come to me from several places, just because they trust my work”.
On her achievements, she replied gently, ” I would say my greatest achievement would be the knowledge that I gained from my college, for which I would always give credit to my parents. I would give credit to my college because it gave me a lot of exposure to the real market and trends. I had done a lot of shows like ‘Dubai Fashion Week’, and ‘Delhi Fashion Week’, also I did a lot of exhibitions in Raipur, in Delhi, and in Bangalore. But one of my achievements, I would say ‘Dubai Fashion Week’. And gradually I got the opportunity to do some shows and then a lot of newspapers in Raipur covered me”.
She also shares her ways to combat challenges, “When you are a bachelor you have fewer challenges and you know you can do, you can travel, you can work, as many hours you can, but then after being married you get a lot of responsibility and you still don’t want to compromise on your passion, that’s what happened with me, but I am lucky to have a supportive family of both my parents and my in-laws, my husband; I owe my success widely to them as well. However, there were a few challenges when it came to balancing my personal and professional life, but I think I managed it well. I’m very passionate about my work so I always make time for my work no matter what comes front”.
She had some tips and advice for beginners in this profession of fashion designing, she said, “I would say that taking exposure working under someone, like an internship or working with a particular brand gives you a lot of exposure and understanding that make you confident”.
She further adds, “Always be true to your work. Never try to cheat, when it comes to your work. And also it’s very important, I think consistency wins over talent always. So yes you are talented but you have to be consistent. If you lose your interest, your talent won’t help you. So be consistent, you will reach there. All the best”.
