Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly elections, a heartwarming incident occurred in the Naxal-affected Kanker district. A 93-year-old man, Sher Singh Hedko, from Bhainsakanhar village, registered his vote for the first time, thanks to a door-to-door campaign organized by the district administration to ensure eligible voters were included in the voter list.
It came as a surprise to officials that Mr. Hedko had never exercised his voting right before because his name was not included in the voter’s list due to incomplete documentation. However, after completing the necessary processes, his name was successfully added to the list. His family expressed their excitement about his newfound ability to vote, although Mr. Hedko mentioned that due to his age, he faced difficulties in speaking.
This development is not an isolated incident, as many elderly individuals in Antagarh district also had their names included in the voter list for the first time. Kanker District Collector Priyanka Shukla commended the Electoral Registration Officers for their diligent efforts in reaching out to those whose names were initially missing from the voter list and ensuring they were included. The collector described this as a remarkable achievement, highlighting the dedication of booth-level officials in facilitating this democratic process
