Local residents have taken it upon themselves to address the contamination of a significant water body, which has been negatively impacting the local ecosystem and wildlife. They initiated this action as they felt that the authorities were not taking adequate measures to safeguard the wetlands.
The contamination of the lake has caused a drastic reduction in oxygen levels, severely affecting marine life. To combat this issue, locals are actively involved in cleaning the pond daily from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm, removing approximately 3 to 4 tons of water hyacinths and waste.
Despite receiving no support from the government, the dedicated campaign members continue their selfless work to restore the pond. This body of water, built in 1772 by King Dalpat Dev for irrigation and drainage, had been neglected over time. Around 18-19 years ago, government efforts to revive it proved largely ineffective.
The overall condition of these ponds has deteriorated significantly, with more than half of them and wells having vanished. Only a few remain as a part of Bastar’s heritage, and these dedicated campaign members have taken it upon themselves to preserve one of them.
