Supreme Court Of India Introduces WhatsApp Updates for Advocates

In a landmark move towards enhancing transparency and accessibility in the judicial system, the Supreme Court of India announced the integration of WhatsApp messaging services with its IT infrastructure, on April 25. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud unveiled this groundbreaking initiative, marking a significant milestone in the court’s journey towards digitization.

The initiative aims to streamline communication between the Supreme Court and advocates, providing them with real-time updates on case filings, case listings, and cause lists directly through WhatsApp messages. Advocates will now receive automated notifications regarding case filings, ensuring timely access to crucial information. Additionally, members of the bar will receive cause lists on their mobile phones as soon as they are published, facilitating better preparation for upcoming hearings.

CJI Chandrachud emphasized the importance of embracing technology to strengthen the right to access to justice and enhance transparency in the judicial process. By leveraging WhatsApp’s ubiquitous messaging platform, the Supreme Court seeks to revolutionize communication channels, making vital information readily available to all stakeholders.

The integration of WhatsApp messaging services aligns with the Supreme Court’s broader efforts towards digitization and modernization of judicial operations. Under the guidance of CJI Chandrachud, the court has been actively pursuing initiatives to digitize court proceedings and improve accessibility for litigants and lawyers.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta hailed the move as a “revolutionary step,” highlighting its potential to transform daily work habits and promote sustainability by reducing paper usage. The initiative reflects the court’s commitment to embracing technology as a catalyst for positive change in the legal landscape.

As part of the initiative, the Supreme Court of India has provided an official WhatsApp number for advocates to receive updates. However, it clarified that the number will not accept messages or calls, ensuring streamlined communication channels.

With the government allocating ₹7,000 crores for the e-court project, the digitization of the judiciary is poised to accelerate, ushering in a new era of efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in the Indian legal system.
