In the vibrant city of Raipur, nestled amidst the beauty of Srinagar, lives a passionate and determined artist known as DJ Vasuki. Formerly, Siddharth Upadhyay is not just a DJ but a music producer who has been making waves in the music industry. With a loving family of five, Siddharth embarked on a remarkable journey to pursue his passion with genres like Tribal Techno, Melodic, Progressive, Indie Dance, and Afro.
Siddharth’s early days as a DJ were far from glamorous; they were characterized by struggle and determination. Raipur, at the time, did not offer the vast scope for a career in music, and he had to make ends meet by taking on various job roles. However, Siddharth had an unwavering commitment to his dream, which led him to learn from sound vendors and undergo training in Bombay for an entire year. He returned to Raipur with a newfound expertise and passion that would eventually make him a name to reckon with.
In his early days, Siddharth was a CD DJ, and he fondly remembers collecting and storing those CDs that were pivotal to his journey. Over the past 14 years, he has evolved from a CD DJ to a skilled music producer, running his studio from the comfort of his home.
Siddharth’s inspiration comes from his family. His father, a “Mridangam” player, and his mother, an ardent film enthusiast, instilled a deep love for music in him. However, his true calling came when he witnessed the performance of the legendary Dutch DJ and Music Producer, Hardwell. This experience piqued his curiosity about how sound works and how speakers are made. This marked the beginning of his journey into the world of music production.
Chasing his dreams wasn’t easy for Siddharth, especially given his background as a Brahmin boy from a family of priests. Convincing his family about his passion for DJing and the night culture was a challenge. They were skeptical about the club scene and initially disapproved. Despite this, Siddharth persevered. He started DJing without pay and without financial support, even riding his bicycle to venues during late hours. He faced parental scolding but ultimately won their contentment and support.
In a competitive environment, Siddharth saved his pocket money to purchase CDs. He took inspiration from Indian DJs like DJ Kawal, whose music he listened to in the early 2000s. Today, he not only follows his idol but also shares the stage with him, marking a significant achievement in his career.
Siddharth recalls the initial days when people demotivated and demoralized him, but now, the same people are approaching him for various opportunities. His advice to beginners is to respect their seniors, listen to their advice, and react thoughtfully. He encourages aspiring artists never to give up and to make their families understand their passion. He emphasizes the importance of supporting fellow artists financially, mentally, and emotionally, as well as the idea that every family should have a musician.
Siddharth is deeply passionate about his work, and he is grateful that his family is closely connected to music. His brother is a classical singer, and together they continue the musical legacy of their family.
DJ Vasuki believes that Indian music should coexist with Western pop, techno, and trance music. He asserts that music has its roots in Sanskrit and plans to incorporate mantras into his original compositions, honoring his Indian heritage.
For the past three years, he has been performing under the name DJ Vasuki, with a focus on creating melody house and techno music. The name Vasuki is derived from Lord Shiva’s snake, Vasuki, the second king of serpents. He aspires to incorporate mantras into his original creations, bringing a blend of tradition and modernity to the music industry.
