Recognizing the importance of this biodiversity hotspot, the Forest Department has designated it as a protected area, emphasizing the need for conservation efforts.
However, the cohabitation of humans and king cobras presents a pressing concern, particularly during the electoral process. Polling personnel stationed overnight at these remote polling stations face the risk of encountering these majestic yet potentially dangerous reptiles. The lack of proper sleeping arrangements exacerbates the situation, with personnel often relegated to resting on makeshift beds placed directly on the ground, leaving them vulnerable to snakebites.
Recognizing the urgency of the matter, the Health Department was alerted to provide anti-snake venom facilities at nearby health centers, ensuring prompt medical intervention in the event of a snakebite.
The presence of king cobras in Korba’s forests underscores the rich biodiversity of the region, with various endangered species finding refuge amidst its verdant expanses. Despite being revered as the “king of snakes,” the king cobra’s intrusion into residential areas poses a significant risk to human safety, necessitating proactive measures to mitigate potential conflicts.
As the Lok Sabha elections approach, preparations are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of both polling personnel and voters alike. Specialized teams will be deployed to monitor elephant-affected areas during the night, while the Health Department remains vigilant in providing essential medical support to cobra-affected polling stations.
The Lemru and Pasarkhet forest areas, renowned for their suitability as cobra habitats, serve as crucial focal points for conservation efforts. Since the sighting of the first king cobra in Kerakchhar in 2014, incidents of snakebites have been on the rise, underscoring the need for proactive measures to safeguard human lives.
Through collaborative efforts between various departments and heightened community awareness, the authorities aim to ensure a safe and seamless electoral process, where both humans and wildlife coexist harmoniously in the verdant landscapes of Korba.
