Simply Blood founder Kiran Verma launches campaign
Blood donation is a serious issue in India. Firstly because of the lack of sufficient blood donors in India despite having a population of more than 1.3 billion people, secondly, because of the commercialization and trading of blood, and third because of the Lack of awareness.
One person who is putting immense effort into making people aware of the same is Kiran Verma. He is credited with conducting the longest blood awareness campaign ever by an individual in the world.
But what prompted him to do this?
In 2016, a poor family from Raipur, made Kiran resolve, that no family will die due to a lack of blood by 2025 in India.
Kiran had started ‘Simply Blood’. On being informed about a poor family from Raipur that wanted blood, he did the needful, saving a life. But this very same voluntarily donated, free-of-cost blood was sold to a family for INR 1500/- . To repay the amount, the lady had to resort to prostitution. Uninformed, he went to meet the family and on knowing the truth, which was difficult to stomach. He left his job the same day, to work towards his goal. That was the moment he decided to quit his high-paying marketing job and create awareness among people about blood donation.
He has embarked on a walk that will be the longest in terms of its duration, with him walking over 21,000 km, taking almost 2 years to finish. He has named the walk “Change with One Walk”.
To support Verma’s walk, 48 blood donation camps have been organized in different parts of the country through which more than 7,239 units of blood have been collected. Apart from the camps, more than 3,000 individual blood donors have donated blood in their capacity at different blood banks across India and abroad to support this campaign. A 3.5 km marathon was also organized in Varanasi where more than 100 people participated. Till now he had met 500,000 people and more than 10,000 people have donated blood to support his #21000kmsWalk.
