Wellness: You are not your mental illness

Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being, it is all about how we think, feel, and behave.

In a world that seems to shift on its axis faster and with greater dynamism nowadays, our emotional & mental wellness are exposed to newer experiences at a much faster rate than ever before. Social Media platforms on some levels have created an awareness and open dialog for people who experience mental health challenges. Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional well-being, it is all about how we think, feel, and behave. It can leave someone feeling stranded, hopeless, miserable, and small. And for a topic that is rapidly growing, we believe that we need to bring much more awareness. According to the WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to his or her community. Some things do improve mental wellness.

MEDITATION does it.

It is the practice of witnessing awareness and mindfulness. While there are many forms of meditation, the goal is a feeling of relaxation and inner peace. In a review published in March 2014 in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers reviewed more than 18,000 scientific studies looking at the relationship between meditation, depression, and anxiety. The results showed that mindful meditation has moderate evidence in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Another study, published in April 2018 in the journal Psychiatry Review, found that individuals with a generalized anxiety disorder who participated in a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program had a greater reduction in stress markers than a control group.
